This page has been a media wiki developed in the framework of a programme called the Institute of Gender and Technology coordinated by the NGO Tactical Tech between 2014 and 2018 and funded by the Swedish International Cooperation Agency. The Gender and Technology Institutes (GTI), which targeted women activists, human rights defenders and LGBTIQ people, took place in Germany, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Spain, Panama, Skri Lanka, Malaysia, Mexico and Uruguay. Developed in partnership with local and international organisations, each IGT has developed specific content and methodologies that address the risks, attacks and contexts faced by women activists in those regions.  During these events, we have worked with women and transgender people who are land defenders, indigenous leaders, sexual and reproductive rights activists, artivists, lawyers, journalists, privacy and human rights defenders.

Hello from the dead!

  • Cuanto tiempo estuvieron activas?

  • Cuanto tiempo estuvieron activas?

Zombie media is concerned with media that is not only out of use, but resurrected to new uses, contexts and adaptations. Things break apart everyday anyhow—especially high technology—and end up as inert objects, dead media, discarded technology. Yet, dead media creeps back as dangerous toxins into the soil, or alternatively as zombie media recycled into new assemblies. According to Ernst, media archaeology is less “about dead media, but . . . media undead. There is an untimeliness of media which is incorporated here” [23]. Hence, there is a distinct difference between Wolfgang Ernst and the Dead Media Project of Bruce Sterling, which in a different way addresses forgotten media and the obsolete. Zombie media is concerned with media that is not only out of use, but resurrected to new uses, contexts and adaptations. Hello from the dead! - Anarchaserver nekrocementry

An archive of feminist websites with zombie potential

Here Marie Laveau and the Zombie snake, guardians of the Anarchaserver nekrocementery. In this sacred space we honor the memory of some feminist websites and media. This cemetery is an archive of static copies. They are like a summary of what they were when they were "alive", when they were available online. We have vacuumed a static copy for reasons of weight, but also for security reasons. Our nekrocementery has a limited space and that is why we carefully choose the pages that rest in this archival space.

Static copies no longer contain dynamic elements such as videos linked from portals, or certain programming languages such as flash or java. Now these pages are static copies of themselves, once they are removed from their online life, by archiving them, their memory becomes somehow smoother and more synthetic, the contents, forms and colors remain but the interactions and movements that could have taken place before are no longer present.

In this cemetery, we remember and agree on an obituary for these pages. We are Marie Laveau and the Zombie Snake, and as guardians of this nekrocementery we make sure that each page has its own obituary or necrology:

  • What was the point of that page?
  • Who were the people or collectives that thought of them and kept them online?
  • How long were they active?
  • Why were they removed?
  • Do they have potential to come back to life?

Determining their zombie potential is simple. If someone still has an integral copy of the website and its database and is happy to give it to another person or group who wants to re-connect it to a hosting and take care of its maintenance, in such a case we consider that the page has zombie potential. Anarchaserver will put you in contact with someone that has shown interest for bringing your website back to life. We will only put you in contact, we will not try to mediate in these zombie processes as bringing back to life is a complex task and the ethical-political issues should be discussed between the parties involved in that process.

In any case, the fact that an effort has been made to archive these pages here already means that there is a special affection or dedication to them. Enough to re-create them in this archival space, hoping that their contents and forms will arouse new ideas, perceptions and passions in the entities (human or bots) that will visit them in the future. This space will grow and one day we will have to think about how to organise the space by themes, contents, dates, reasons for closure. In short, as with all archival spaces, the moment will come when we will have to decide on the axes and themes to organise and find the pages that rest here.

These pages are at risk of being closed, or have already been closed, for various reasons, and not always because they were no longer spaces of possibility, affiliations or legacy, but because sometimes their validity over time has expired (like when you make a page for an event and then that one has already passed but you still want to remember it), sometimes because the partners who keep it together no longer agree among themselves, other times because their current guardian is not reliable, other times because there are no longer reasons to keep it, other times because the collective has disappeared.

Entering this nekrocementery as a website is in itself an act about memory, legacy, and the archive. We understand that its zombie potential lies in the human and technical capacity to re-home it dynamically, but it also lies in the fact that all feminist websites have relevant content, ideas, substance, words and sentences that can activate processes and new ideas in partners exposed to their contents.

Sometimes the result of an action, a writing, a book, a video, a drawing, an event, a page, may not create the desired impact on those who will discover it in the living times of its creators, but sometimes that impact happens later, in other times, in other places, other generations are touched by those contents, ideas, colors, inspire them and they take them up again to create something new or old, something that moves them, moves them, something that transforms the world around them. This is the potential that we recognise in these cemeteries, to honor our memories, actions and their potential to transform the future world.
